Case study: our own website

Fixing our own local search: 14 areas, every page findable.

Six of our finished city pages were invisible to Google, and our menus listed only 8 of the areas we serve. Here is what we found and what we changed, the same way we would do it for a client.

The situation

What we found

We serve 13 local areas across the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver, plus remote clients anywhere in BC, for 14 service areas in all. A check of our own site found three problems.

  • Six finished city pages had never been published, so Google got a page-not-found.
  • The structured data on those six pages pointed to another page's breadcrumb, a copy-and-paste slip.
  • The menu, footer, homepage and service pages listed only 8 of our 14 areas.

At a glance

What we changed

Six fixes, checked live

  • Published the six pages: Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and Pitt Meadows.
  • Linked them from the service areas page and from neighbouring city pages.
  • Fixed the breadcrumb in the structured data on all six.
  • Brought the menu, footer, homepage and six service pages to the same list of 14 areas.
  • Rebuilt the sitemap and resubmitted it to Google Search Console.
  • Checked every page type on both our sites for a stray noindex tag. Only the thank-you pages, which should stay out of search, have one.

How we checked it

  • Fetched every page type live on both sites, bypassing caches, and read the robots tags.
  • Confirmed each new page loads normally instead of returning an error.
  • Confirmed the rebuilt sitemap lists all 14 areas.

What we would check on your site

  • Are all your location and service pages published and in the sitemap?
  • Does your structured data point to the right page?
  • Do your menu, footer and homepage list the same areas?
  • Is a noindex tag hiding anything from search?
